The First GECAM Observation Results on Terrestrial Gamma‐Ray Flashes and Terrestrial Electron Beams

چکیده

Abstract Gravitational‐wave high‐energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All‐sky Monitor (GECAM) is a space‐borne instrument dedicated to monitoring transients, including Terrestrial Gamma‐ray Flashes (TGFs) and Electron Beams (TEBs). We implemented TGF/TEB search algorithm for GECAM, with which 147 bright TGFs, 2 typical TEBs special TEB‐like events are identified during an effective observation time of ∼9 months. show that, gamma‐ray charged particle detectors, GECAM can effectively identify distinguish TGFs TEBs, measure their temporal spectral properties in detail. A very high TGF‐lightning association rate ∼80% obtained between GLD360 east Asia region.

Properties of the thundercloud discharges responsible for terrestrial gammaray flashes

[1] The source of terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) has been an active area of research since their discovery by Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory/Burst and Transient Source Experiment in 1994. These intense bursts of gamma rays originate within thunderclouds via the rapid production of relativistic runaway electrons, accelerated by thundercloud/lightning electric fields to multi-MeV energies. R...

Radio emissions from terrestrial gamma-ray flashes

[1] The theory of radio frequency (RF) emissions by terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) is developed. These radio emissions, which are separate from the emission caused by lightning, are produced by the electric currents generated by runaway electrons and resulting low-energy electrons and ions. It is found from theory that the radio frequency pulses produced by TGFs are large enough to measur...

Calculation of beams of positrons, neutrons, and protons associated with terrestrial gamma ray flashes

Positron beams have been observed by the Fermi satellite to be correlated with lightning leaders, and neutron emissions have been attributed to lightning and to laboratory sparks as well. Here we discuss the cross sections to be used for modeling these emissions, and we calculate the emissions of positrons, neutrons, and also protons from lightning leaders. Neutrons were first erroneously attri...

Spectral dependence of terrestrial gamma-ray flashes on source distance

[1] We use lightning sferics from theWorldWide Lightning Location Network to identify storms near 362 Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs). The combined spectrum of TGFs with storms within 300 km of the sub-satellite point is much harder than the spectrum of TGFs with more distant storms. When these data are compared with simulations of vertically oriented relativistic runaway breakdown, it is ...

Observation of intrinsically bright terrestrial gamma ray flashes from the Mediterranean basin

We present three terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs) observed over the Mediterranean basin by the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscope Imager (RHESSI) satellite. Since the occurrence of these events in the Mediterranean region is quite rare, the characterization of the events was optimized by combining different approaches in order to better define the cloud of origin. The TGFs on 7 N...
